Congratulations to Dr. George Doig, Recipient of the 2013-14 Distinguished Service Award

Congratulations to Dr. George Doig, Recipient of the 2013-14 Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award is given by Ontario’s Anesthesiologists to recognize a member who has provided significant service in the Province of Ontario in the areas of Clinical Service, Administration & Leadership, Teaching, Research or Humanitarian in nature. This year’s recipient epitomizes not only all of those characteristics and attributes but also much more.

Our recipient graduated from University of Manitoba medicine in 1970. He was a family doctor in Kenora and Thunder Bay before returning to U of M to complete training in anesthesiology in 1979. He returned to Thunder Bay, where he practiced anesthesia for over 30 years and only recently retired. Over that time he served as Chief of Anesthesia and served as the Director of their Intensive Care Unit for almost 20 years. He served in numerous roles including serving on the Governance Committee of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, part of the Royal College, served on the CAS and also had the honor of serving as Chair of our Anesthesia Section on the OMA. He has served and held numerous other positions including serving as research site investigator for many studies. He also has been highly involved in the local Community Auditorium and the United Way. Despite all of these activities, he has been able to be a pretty good golfer, fair cook and lover of fine wines.

When we asked his colleagues what his biggest achievement was, the one that was fondly cited was changing the hospital policy of no longer requiring in house anesthesia presence for continuous epidural infusions. A close second memory was getting his team banned from Kingston for the OMA hockey team.

Although his license plate says ‘DN GASSIN’, he still has a lot to give. It gives me great pleasure to announce this year’s recipient of our highest honor, from Thunder Bay, the town that produces the best and the most good looking anesthetists, please help me congratulate Dr. George Doig.
