Sustainable Technologies and Programs

MEMSORB™

memsorb™ uses patented advanced membrane technology to filter CO2 from anesthetic circuits rather than absorption via a chemical reaction. This next-generation technology relies on a polymeric membrane (similar to those used in cardiac oxygenators) that selectively allows CO2 to leave the rebreathing system, while maintaining the anesthetic vapour in the circuit.

A recent Life Cycle Assessment confirms the significant environmental benefit to using memsorb™ over traditional CO2 absorbents. memsorb™ can be used for up to 12 months, eliminating frequent disposal of chemical-based CO2 absorbers. The filter is compatible with both GE and Drager machines and can be returned to the manufacturer for proper recycling. The unique technology is designed to support your hospital’s greening and sustainability initiatives by reducing plastic waste and eliminating the disposal of exhausted chemical absorbent materials.

Installation is simple and ease of use has been reported as favourable. To discuss an evaluation or information on the Life Cycle Assessment, please contact Wendy Vrooman at vrooman@dmfmedical.com or visit memsorb.com

Stryker Sustainability Solutions

Stryker Sustainability Solutions is an industry-leading recycling and reclamation initiative that reprocesses valuable single-use medical devices for reuse.

The program collects single-use surgical devices in a specialized “green” container. The Stryker collection bin replaces the current yellow bin and, therefore, no extra space is required for collection. All materials that would normally go into the container are accepted. No sorting is required – SSS does the sorting. No workflow changes are required on behalf of clinical surgical staff.

The green receptacles are sent to Stryker for sorting, processing and recycling. Stryker has a “buy-back” program that is complementary to their collection initiative, with processed devices being approximately 40% cost of the original device.

As well as the obvious environmental benefits, hospitals save money by diverting expensive biohazard materials from landfill. The program is very easy to implement as SSS representatives coordinate with hospitals’ environmental services and provide education to operating room staff.
